Pedasi, Panama

A breeze comes in off of the Pacific Ocean and is more than welcome beneath the hot, tropical sun in the clear skies above Pedasi, Panama. Residents of and tourists visiting Pedasi, Panama, relax to the soothing sound of nearby Pacific waves that greet the sandy beaches and rocky shores. The hustle and bustle of city life is unknown in these peaceful Panamanian hinterlands. One of the outposts of the Azuero Peninsula, small and quiet Pedasi, Panama seems to exist in another time and place.

History of Pedasi, Panama

The area around Pedasi, Panama was settled by Spanish colonizers during the fifteenth century after they drove out most of the indigenous peoples who had been hunting and fishing the lands and waters of Azuero Peninsula for several thousand years.

Located far off the trade routes that passed through David and Santiago, the Spanish who colonized Pedasi were more of less on their own and worked hard to survive in the rather dry terrain typical of this region.

The abundant sealife in the waters offshore from Pedasi, Panama encouraged the establishment of small fishing villages that were rather similar to those of the indigenous people who came before them. Other settlers took to cattle farming in the windswept hills around Pedasi and farming vegetables and fruits such as corn and melons.

Aside from the American navy using some of the deserted shorelines near Pedasi for target practice, and this small town being the birth place of Mireya Moscoco, (Panama’s first woman president) not much else of note has happened at Pedasi, Panama.

In more recent times, Pedasi, Panama has become popular among surfers and investors eager to develop the beautiful, empty coasts of this region.

Culture in Pedasi, Panama

The culture of Pedasi, Panama is still very Spanish in flavor. As in many other areas of the Azuero Peninsula, descendents of Spanish families who settled Pedasi a few hundred years ago raised cattle and farmed the land without much influence or influx of people from elsewhere. For this reason, inhabitants of Pedasi and other towns in the region continue to celebrate the same festivals that were celebrated by their ancestors who settled this region over four hundred years ago.

In Pedasi, the most important of these festivals are the feast day of Santa Catalina on November 25th, and “carnival” celebrated in February to kick off the start of Lent. Despite Pedasi being a small town, its carnival festivities are some of the most colorful and lively in all of Panama.
